Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gettysburg College volleyball team fell in its season opener 3-0 at Catholic University on Wednesday night.
Catholic (1-0) won the opening match of the season 25-19, 26-24, and 25-21.
The Cardinals led as many as 10 points in the opening set before Gettysburg (0-1) pulled to 21-19 following a 10-2 run. Catholic closed out the opening set with a pair of kills and a pair of aces.
Junior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) contributed three kills and two aces as the Bullets jumped out to a 9-4 advantage in the second set. Catholic came back to tie the frame at 18-18 before a 4-0 run by the visitors. The Cardinals took advantage of a handful of errors to close out the set on a 7-2 run.
Gettysburg briefly took a one-point lead in the final set at 15-14 before Catholic ran off four-straight points to regain the upper-hand.
Bergin finished with a match-high 14 kills to go with six digs. Sophomore
Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) posted eight kills and five blocks, while classmate
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) put up 11 digs.
Gettysburg hosts the Battlefield Classic this Friday and Saturday. The Bullets will welcome a dozen teams into Bream Gym and Hauser Field House with matches beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday.
