Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Emilie Arrix pushed across the game-winning goal with less than a second remaining to lift Dickinson College past Gettysburg College 2-1 in Centennial Conference field hockey action Tuesday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
After a scoreless opening half, Gettysburg (3-3, 0-2 CC) pressed the advantage early in the final period with five penalty corners in the first eight minutes. The Bullets finally found pay-dirt in the 43rd minute when junior
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) took the penalty corner and slid the ball to the top of the circle to classmate
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck). Fitzgerald took a quick touch to her right and then slammed a line drive into the goal for the game's first score.
The tide turned in Dickinson's (5-1, 1-1 CC) favor following the goal as the Red Devils accounted for a dozen penalty corners in the game's final 21 minutes. Sophomore goalie
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) kept the Red Devils off the board with a trio of saves and received some help with a defensive save by junior
Nina Diamond (Berwyn, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame). The offensive onslaught by the visitors eventually turned into a goal as Caroline Karwel found a seam in the defense following a pass by Merritt Davis at 58:59.
Dickinson drew a penalty corner with less than 30 seconds to go and with time winding down, Amber Dey took a shot that was stopped by Mowery. The ball bounced back in front of the goal and after bouncing around several sticks, made its way to Arrix who slid the shot inside the right post, leaving 0.1 seconds on the board.
Dickinson finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, while Gettysburg held a slim lead in penalty corners at 13-12.
Mowery finished with seven saves. Senior
Emily Van Horn (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) recorded her team-best fifth defensive save in the first half.
Gettysburg heads to Washington College on Friday, Sept. 25. Game time is 7 p.m.
