HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Gettysburg College field hockey team came out on the wrong end of a defensive struggle at Haverford College as the host Fords scored the lone goal early in the second period to win 1-0 on Saturday.
Gettysburg (3-4, 1-3 CC) out-shot Haverford (5-5, 1-2 CC) 7-1 in the first half, but the visitors were turned away on all five shots on goal by Ford goalie Danielle Rette. Rette posted a pair saves on consecutive shots by seniors
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and
Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) late in the opening frame to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
The Fords made the most of their first shot on goal as Mason McNulty tipped in a pass from Paige Carson in the 39th minute. Looking to add to the advantage later in the second half, McNulty was stopped in front of the goal on a defensive save by sophomore

Kit Towers (Midlothian, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) was turned away by Rette with 50 seconds to go.
Gettysburg's defense held Haverford to just six shots. The Bullets led in penalty corners 9-4. Rette finished with six saves for the hosts.
Gettysburg hosts Messiah College on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m.
