HAVERFORD, Pa. – Playing its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the Gettysburg College men's soccer team put up a valiant effort but lost 3-2 in overtime at No. 8 Haverford College in a Centennial Conference (CC) tilt Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Patrick Santini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman defender
Ezekiel Omosanya (Lagos, Nigeria/Northfield Mount Hermon [Mass.]) each scored for the Bullets (5-3-1, 2-2 CC) while freshman goalie
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) finished with four saves.
Nick Jannelli scored the game-winner for the Fords (7-1-2, 4-0 CC) in the 93rd minute, dribbling through the defense and finishing inside the far post. Sam Miller stopped two shots for Haverford.
The Fords never trailed and outshot the Bullets 18-8 for the game.
Haverford struck early when Tejan Walcott scored in the third minute, but the Bullets answered 11 minutes later when Santini finished off a cross from senior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) to make it a 1-1 game.
Keane made a pair of saves in the opening half, when Haverford outshot the Bullets 10-3. The Fords went back in front with just 44 seconds left in the period, when Julian Bright converted on a deflection.
Gettysburg would attempt five shots in the second half and pulled even in the 68th minute when Omosanya accepted a cross from freshman
Jeff Schaefer (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and buried a shot into the far post to make it 2-2.
Though Haverford controlled the ball for the latter portion of the half, the Bullets threatened in the closing seconds, receiving a free kick just outside the box. But Smith's shot sailed wide at the horn.
Jannelli's game-winner was the only shot of the overtime period.
Gettysburg returns to the pitch next Saturday, when it hosts Swarthmore College at 1 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
