WESTMINSTER, Md. – Senior
Laura Bergin (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) recorded 21 kills and 22 digs to lead Gettysburg College to an incredible five-set comeback victory at McDaniel College in a key Centennial Conference volleyball match inside the Gill Center Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (15-6, 5-2 CC) slid into third place in the conference standings with the win over McDaniel (11-12, 3-4 CC), but to say it was hard-earned seems almost an understatement. The Bullets trailed for most of the first four sets, including 20-14 with the Green Terror holding a 2-1 advantage in the fourth set. The visitors bounced back to take the fourth frame and led throughout the decisive fifth set on the way to a 3-2 victory (25-23, 22-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-11).
McDaniel held a 20-13 lead in the opening set, but the resilient Bullets sliced the deficit with a 5-0 run started with a kill by freshman
Sierra Conboy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura). The Green Terror maintained the upper-hand and led 23-22 before freshman
Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Bergin posted back-to-back kills. A hitting error by the hosts handed Gettysburg the opening win.
Despite an early run by the hosts, Gettysburg fought back again in the second set which witnessed 13 ties and four lead changes. With the score tied at 22, McDaniel secured the win with kills by Allie Lugar and Teryn Rath sandwiched around an attack error by the Bullets.
McDaniel cruised to a victory in the third set and started strong in set four, ending the former contest with six-straight points and starting the latter on an 8-2 run. Gettysburg refused to go away, steadily chipping away at the lead and eventually pulling to 20-18 following back-to-back kills by Conboy.
The Green Terror sat just two points shy of match point with a 23-20 lead. Bergin put down another kill and a pair of hitting errors by the hosts tied the contest. Bergin followed up with an ace to put Gettysburg in front for the first time in the set. After a ball-handling error on the visitors, McDaniel committed a pair of hitting errors to bring about the fifth set.
Bergin laid down the law at the start of the decisive contest, pounding down four kills as the Bullets raced out to a 5-0 lead. McDaniel closed the gap to 13-11, but two more errors halted the Green Terror comeback and closed the win for Gettysburg.
Bergin became the first Bullet with 20 kills and 20 digs in a match in 12 years.
Nicole Barr '05 was the last to accomplish the feat with 25 kills and 20 digs against Elizabethtown on Oct. 29, 2004. Freshman
Francesca Garison (Metuchen, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) posted 11 kills, while Conboy and freshman
Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) each tallied seven kills.
Junior
Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) needed 25 digs to reach 1,000 for her career and she hit that number exactly to lead the defensive effort. Junior
Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) topped her personal high with 19 digs, while freshman
Caroline Sequeira (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) put up a dozen digs.
Junior setter
