WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg blanked 23rd-ranked McDaniel College for 73 minutes but a late goal handed the host Green Terror a 1-0 victory in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Kiera Loftus (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) made nine saves for Gettysburg (6-6-1, 2-3-1 CC) while Sarah McDonald stopped a pair of shots to earn the shutout for McDaniel (13-1, 6-0 CC), which remained unbeaten in conference play.
It was a tale of two halves, with neither side generating much offense in the opening stanza. The Bullets held McDaniel without a shot in the period but was limited to three shots of their own and the scoreboard read 0-0 at the break. However, the Green Terror turned up the heat in the second half, when it outshot the Orange and Blue 17-3.
The Bullets best chance to score came early in the second half, when a shot from senior
Julia Ramsey (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) off a corner was headed toward the net but was cleared by a McDaniel defender.
Just minutes later, Loftus stood tall during an 11-second, four-shot flurry, making three saves while another shot hit the post.
The Green Terror hit the crossbar midway through the second half before breaking through in the 74th minute, when Christina Wroblewski one-timed a pass from Katie Kirschenmann on the left wing.
Loftus kept it a one-goal game with her final two saves, but the Bullets were unable to get off a shot the rest of the way.
Gettysburg returns home on Saturday, when it takes on Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College at 4 p.m. on Senior Day.
