Box Score
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) posted 13 saves, but it wasn't enough to push Gettysburg College past No. 12 Muhlenberg College as the Mules maintained their pursuit of perfection in the Centennial Conference with a 3-0 win Friday night.
Gettysburg (6-7, 4-4 CC) maintained its position in fifth place in the conference standings, while Muhlenberg (14-1, 9-0 CC) moved one game away from running the table league play. The two teams trailing the Bullets in pursuit of the final playoff spot - Haverford College (7-7, 3-4 CC) and McDaniel College (4-10, 3-4 CC) - play each other Saturday.
Muhlenberg didn't waste any time getting on the board as Emily Boyle slapped in a pass from Rachel Strow 4:03 into the contest. Five minutes later, Mowery stopped a shot by Anna Kennedy, but the Mule attacker was right there for the putback to make it 2-0.
Mowery posted nine saves and sophomore
Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) tallied her second defensive save of the season to maintain the deficit going into the break.
Gettysburg tried to cut into the Muhlenberg lead with a pair of shots on goal midway through the second stanza. Both attempts by senior
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and junior
Philippa Lumsden (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) were turned away by Mule goalie Emma Rosenthal.
Stephi Rydgren scored the game's final goal in the 62nd minute.
Muhlenberg finished with a 21-6 edge in shots and a 13-3 lead in penalty corners.
Mowery finished one shy of her season high with 13 saves.
Gettysburg faces No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College at home on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m.
