Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. Senior Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored a pair of goals to lead Gettysburg College to a 3-2 victory at Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (4-5, 2-3 CC) dominated play from the start, out-shooting Swarthmore (4-9, 0-6 CC) 10-2 in the first half alone. The Bullets put two shots in goal in the first 10 minutes before Wright struck in the 19th minute, tipping in a strike by freshman Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) for a 1-0 advantage.

The defense did not allow a shot on goal by the hosts in the first half of play, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the half as Swarthmore goalie Zelda Bank recorded a pair of saves and Ursula Monaghan picked up a defensive save in the final seven minutes of the opening period.

The Garnet manufactured the first offense in the final stanza when Jordyn Bell tapped in a cross from Katherine Ianni in the 43rd minute. Gettysburg didn't take long to answer as junior Philippa Lumsden (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) smacked a pass from classmate Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) into the back of the cage in the 47th minute.

Wright added some insurance with six minutes left to play when senior Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) gathered a rebound and slipped it to her classmate. The goal was Wright's team-best seventh of the season.

Kathleen Carmichael cut the deficit to one with a goal just over a minute later, but the Bullets kept the Garnet away from the cage in the final minutes to secure the win.

Gettysburg finished with a 23-7 lead in shots and a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Senior Ronnie Bridges (Kingsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made one save on the way to earning her first collegiate victory.

Gettysburg travels to Alvernia University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.
