Box Score 2 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Gettysburg College earned a split in a non-conference softball doubleheader at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday. The Bullets won the opener 4-2 before falling 7-6 in nine innings in the nightcap.
Gettysburg (1-1), playing on an actual field for the first time this season, picked up three unearned runs in the top of the second inning. After one run came home on an error, back-to-back singles by sophomore
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and junior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) plated two more.
The Bullets added another tally in the next frame on a double to center field by sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School).
Mary Washington (1-1) cut the lead in half with two runs in the fourth inning and threated to tie the game in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs. Sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) managed to get out of the jam unscathed thanks to a pair of infield fly outs and a strikeout.
Reilly picked up the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits, while striking out four.
Gettysburg opened game two with three unearned runs in the first inning. The first run came home on a throwing error, while the final two came around on a double by Folfas.
The Eagles tacked on two runs in the second inning and tied the game on a home run by Hannah Hautz in the third frame. The Bullets retook the lead 4-3 in the top half of the next inning on a double by sophomore
Jessica Casale (Cranford, N.J./Cranford).
That's where the score stood entering the bottom of the seventh inning when Mary Washington rallied to send the game to extra innings. With runners on first and second with one out, Emily Briggs slapped a single to left field to plate the tying run. Reilly entered the game in relief of freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) and retired the final two batters to prevent additional damage.
Gettysburg took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule which placed a runner on second base to start the extra frames, with senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) doubling home the runner in the eighth and freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington County Regional) plating the runner in the ninth with a single. Mary Washington answered each time with the Eagles scoring the game-winning run on a double by Briggs in the ninth.
Taylor finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Abell scored a pair of runs in game two.
Reilly took the loss in the nightcap despite not giving up an earned run in 1.2 innings of work. Clauser allowed two runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings.
Gettysburg embarks on another non-conference doubleheader at Shenandoah University Sunday at 1 p.m.
