Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Abby Baigelman (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) tossed in the go-ahead goal with eight minutes left and the sure-handed Bullets took care of the rest, controlling the ball for the final five minutes as No. 6 Gettysburg College defeated No. 8 York (Pa.) College in women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (6-1), which dropped a one-goal decision to York (6-3) in the third round of the NCAA Division III playoffs last season, ripped off the game's first four goals. Senior Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) kicked off the scoring with an unassisted tally at 26:54. The Bullets added three goals in less than two minutes with the last tally by junior Emma Christie (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) making it 4-0 with 20:33 to play.

After Allison Kolacy scored York's first goal at 18:51, the hosts appeared to answer with a shot into the cage by junior Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon). The goal was waved off, however, due to a dangerous follow-through. Gettysburg recovered its four-goal lead with a score by sophomore Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) at 10:24.

The Spartans seized momentum going into halftime with a 3-1 run. York won the final six draw controls of the first period and Melissa Meehling tossed in two goals, the last cutting the deficit to 6-4 at the break.

Jaeger scored 1:41 into the second stanza to push the margin to 7-4. The visitors came right back with three unanswered tallies. Two came off free-position shots with Kayleigh Phillips providing the game-tying goal with 18:59 to go.

York goalie Rachel Donovan turned away a pair of attempts by Tropsa, but the Spartans turned the ball over on both of the ensuing possessions. After Donovan picked up a yellow card at 9:27, the Bullets took advantage as Baigelman beat her defender to the middle and blasted the ball into the cage.

York had a chance to tie the game following a save by Donovan, but the Spartans turned the ball over with 5:36 to play. Gettysburg used nearly three-quarters of the field in keeping the ball away from the York players until the final second of play.

Landry finished with two goals, while senior Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) turned in a goal and two assists. Senior Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) contributed one goal and one assist.

Junior Shannon Keeler (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) posted a pair of saves in the first 41:51. Freshman Bailey Pilder (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) played the final 18:09 to pick up the win.

Meehling scored a trio of goals for York, while Donovan finished with four saves.
