Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team opened its spring trip with a close 3-2 win over Eastern Mennonite University before busting out the bats for a 13-2 decision over SUNY Canton on Monday.
Gettysburg (5-1) went right down to the wire in the match up with Eastern Mennonite (1-2). Leading 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Bullets retired the first two batters before the Royals rallied, picking up a hit and walk and bringing across the lead runner on an error.
Sophomore
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) put the game to rest by snaring a hot shot to third base and tagging the lead runner.
Gettysburg received all of its offense in the fourth inning against Eastern Mennonite. Each of the first six batters reached base via five singles and a fielder's choice. Sophomore
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) brought across the first run with a single and freshman
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) picked up two RBI on another base knock.
Sophomore
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) improved to 4-1 with the victory. Reilly allowed one earned run on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
The Bullets didn't waste any time against SUNY Canton, posting all of the offense in just five innings. Sophomore
Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) set the tone with a triple to lead off the game, the first of three base hits for the sophomore on the day. She scored on a fielder's choice by junior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton). Four more runs crossed the plate in the inning, including one a base hit by senior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack).
Gettysburg led 6-1 heading into the top of the fourth when four more runs came home. Twitchell once again started the offense with a triple and scored on a groundout. After the next two batters reached base, Hisgen and Folfas knocked home three more runs to make it 10-1.
After an RBI single by senior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon), extra-base hits by Leonardo and Hisgen in the fifth plated the final two runs.
Twitchell finished 3-for-3 with three runs and a walk. Zengel and Hisgen each posted three hits and two runs with the latter also driving in three. Leonardo tallied two hits, two runs, and two RBI.
Freshman
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) earned her first collegiate victory after allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.
Gettysburg will face Penn State Berks and Greensboro College at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively, on Tuesday.
