No. 6 Gettysburg defeats No. 7 Salisbury 10-8

Junior Caroline Jaeger scored a pair of goals and grabbed five draw controls against Salisbury.
Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Sixth-ranked Gettysburg College locked down seventh-ranked Salisbury University over the final 20 minutes on the way to a 10-8 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Playing for the first time since the 2011 NCAA Division III playoffs, Gettysburg (4-0) and Salisbury (4-1) didn't disappoint the fans who came out to see an epic battle between programs that have combined to win four of the last six national titles. The teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the first half until a three-goal run by the hosts set the score at 5-3 with four minutes before the break.

The Bullets came back to tie the game with senior Emily Tropsa (Darien, Conn./Darien) scoring unassisted at 3:32 and junior Emma Christie (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) tallying a goal following a feed from sophomore Maggie Welsh (Rye, N.Y./Holy Child) with 20 seconds remaining before halftime.

The final period appeared poised to play out like the first as senior Maggie Connolly (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) and Salisbury's Gabbi Nieves traded goals in the opening minutes to maintain the deadlock.

Despite winning the next two draw controls, Salisbury turned the ball over on both possessions and the Bullets took full advantage on the offensive end. After a caused turnover by senior Christina Wright (Kingsville, Md./Fallston), junior Caroline Jaeger (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) put Gettysburg in front 7-6 at 20:50. Just over a minute later, another Sea Gull turnover led to a free-position goal by Christie.

Jaeger seized control of the next draw and senior Abby Baigelman (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) capped the run to push the lead to 9-6 with 18:36 remaining.

After a goal by Kristen Murphy cut the lead to two, Keeler kept the hosts from gaining more ground by knocking away a pair of low shots by Emma Wall in the next five minutes.

Gettysburg controlled possession in the final 10 minutes of the game. When Salisbury managed to regain the ball, the Bullet defense denied any damage by forcing turnovers on back-to-back possessions. Senior Amanda Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) scored on an empty net with 30 seconds left and after the hosts scored with 12 ticks left, Jaeger secured the final draw control.

Gettysburg held Salisbury to a season-low 16 shots – 11 attempts less than its previous season low. The Bullets committed a season-low seven turnovers and finished 14-of-14 on clear attempts. The teams split 20 draw controls.

Seven players scored a goal in a well-balanced offensive effort by the visitors. Connolly, Jaeger, and Christie each tallied two scores, while sophomore Katie Landry (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) posted one goal and two assists. Jaeger came up with five draw controls and Wright tallied two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Keeler recorded five saves and three ground balls.

Wall led Salisbury with three goals, while Gianna Falcone posted seven saves.

Gettysburg heads to Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 12, for showdown at noon.
