WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College scored the only run in its final at bat of the opener before winning a slugfest in the nightcap to complete a sweep of Gettysburg College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday.

McDaniel (20-14, 9-5 CC) won the opening game 1-0 and took game two 10-7. The setbacks knocked Gettysburg (22-10, 9-5 CC) from the top spot in the conference standings and into a three-way tie with the Green Terror and Haverford (20-16, 9-5 CC) for second. Washington College (19-17, 10-4 CC) slid in front of the trio into first place.

Saturday's opening game was a good old-fashioned pitcher's duel between sophomore Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Valerie Lamb. Reilly escaped an early jam in the second inning after McDaniel put runners on second and third with no outs by striking out two batters and getting a liner to first.

Lamb faced the minimum from the second to fifth innings before Gettysburg tried to set the stage for some offense in the top of the sixth. The Bullets put two runners on with one out, but a ground out and a line drive to second base ended the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ally Galati posted a lead-off single. After a fly out and a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second, a single by Olivia Kipe brought Galati around for the winning run.

Reilly dropped to 13-6 on the year with the loss. She allowed one run on eight hits and struck out seven. Senior Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) and junior Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) each went 2-for-3.

Lamb picked up the shutout after allowing seven hits and striking out five.

McDaniel opened the nightcap with the first seven runs. The hosts plated six in the opening frame with two coming home on a double by Jamie Weisser and two more coming in on a single by Caitlin Justice.

Gettysburg struck back with four runs in the third inning. Zengel and sophomore Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School) posted run-scoring singles, while senior Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) plated two more on a bloop single to center field.

Weisser tacked on two more runs with a single in the bottom of the third which would prove to be the difference in the game. Sophomore Mykaela Twitchell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) blasted her team-best fourth home run in the top of the fifth, but the hosts answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 10-5.

Misurell doubled in a run in the sixth and Zengel connected on her second homer of the spring in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Zengel finished off a productive day at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the nightcap. She also became just the third player in conference history to surpass 300 total bases in a career. Folfas went 2-for-4 with one RBI and junior Genie Lavanant (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Blair Academy) went 2-for-3 with a run.

Lindsey Miller went 4-for-4 with three runs and a walk for McDaniel. Weisser finished 2-for-3 with a walk and four RBI.

Gettysburg is scheduled to host Susquehanna University for a non-conference twinbill on Tuesday, April 26, at 3 p.m.
