Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. The Gettysburg College field hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 4 Ursinus College in its Centennial Conference opener on Saturday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Ursinus (4-1, 1-0 CC), the defending conference champion, opened up with three goals in the first 10:40. Ann Kopera recorded the first two, tapping in a shot by Colleen Leahy 1:39 into the game before sending home a penalty stroke nearly four minutes later. Leahy created her own tally in the 11th minute from the baseline.

Gettysburg (2-2, 0-1 CC) sliced into the deficit with a score just over 12 minutes into the game. Senior Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) dribbled inside the arc and tipped a pass ahead to classmate Kathryn Hardman (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). Hardman found the opening to the right for her second goal of the season.

Junior Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) made a pair of stops two minutes later, but Amber Steigerwalt followed up her rebound to strike the ball into the cage and give Ursinus a 4-1 lead. Leahy made it 5-1 heading into halftime after a pass from Brooke Overly.

The two teams played to a standstill in the final stanza. Mowery picked up three saves early in the period and junior Kelly Reymann (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) added a defensive save. The Bullets cut the margin to 5-2 when senior Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) hit the back of the cage following a baseline feed from junior Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry).

Kopera completed a hat trick in the 52nd minute to set the final score.

Mowery finished with seven saves, while senior Nina Diamond (Berwyn, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and freshman Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) joined Reymann with defensive saves.

Gettysburg plays at Dickinson College on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m.
