Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) drilled in a beautiful long-range shot in the 88th minute for her first collegiate goal, capping a thrilling finish and lifting the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Miesemer's goal came less than two minutes after Ursinus (1-4-1, 0-1 CC) had scored to tie the match.

Freshman Charlotte Cenatiempo (Weston, Conn./Weston) also scored her first career goal for the Bullets (4-1, 1-0 CC), striking in the 76th minute to break open a scoreless match.

Gettysburg, which won its fourth game in a row, controlled the match statistically, outshooting the Bears 14-5. However, Courtney Sullivan made eight saves to keep the Bears in it.

Sophomore Kiera Loftus (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) was credited with one save in net for the Bullets.

In what has been an extremely tight rivalry in recent years, Gettysburg and Ursinus avoided overtime for the first time since Gettysburg's 1-0 victory in 2013. The two sides played to a 0-0 tie in 2014 before the Bears earned a 1-0 double-overtime win in the regular-season meeting last year. Then in the Centennial Conference first-round match last November, Ursinus advanced on penalty kicks after another scoreless draw.

Gettysburg peppered Sullivan early, firing off four shots – including three on goal – over the opening 12:30. The Bullets would outshoot Ursinus 6-2 in the period, but Sullivan made three saves and it was a scoreless match at the break.

The Orange and Blue continued their offensive attack in the second half, when they outshot the Bears 8-3. The Bullets finally broke through when Cenatiempo took a cross from junior Nicole Crofton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) from the right and buried a one-timer to make it a 1-0 game.

Ursinus answered in the 86th minute, when Phoebe Shoap headed home a corner kick from Kelly Rosen. It was just the second goal scored against Bullets on the season and the first since Lebanon Valley's overtime tally in Gettysburg's season opener on Sept. 3.

Miesemer, however, would have the final say for the Bullets when she pulled up from 20 yards out and blasted in a shot into the right corner for the game-winner.

Gettysburg continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts 16th-ranked Lynchburg College in a non-conference affair starting at 5 p.m.
