CARLISLE, Pa. – Dickinson College turned in the final four goals to take down Gettysburg College 5-1 in a Centennial Conference field hockey contest Wednesday evening.
Action started hot and heavy as both teams took a pair of shots at the cage in the opening minutes. Both of Dickinson's (4-2, 2-0 CC) attempts were turned away by junior goalie
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern), while Gettysburg's (2-3, 0-2 CC) two tries by seniors
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) and
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) were stopped by Red Devil goalie Heather Meeder.
Despite another save by Mowery, Dickinson converted the first goal as Julia Murphy cashed in the rebound in the seventh minute.
Fitzgerald returned the favor in short order, moving into a tie for the team lead with her fifth goal of the season just three minutes later to tie the score.
Meeder picked up four more saves in the first half, while the Red Devil offense dialed up two more goals. Chelsea Kamer found Libby Tower before scoring her own tally to send the hosts into the break with a 3-1 lead.
Gettysburg aimed to get back on the board in the early minutes of the final stanza, but Fitzgerald's try for a second goal was thwarted by Meeder. A defensive save by senior
Nina Diamond (Berwyn, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) – her team-high fourth of the season – held Dickinson out of the scoring column momentarily, but the hosts eventually worked their way to two more goals in the second half.
Fitzgerald's goal pushed her into a tie for seventh on Gettysburg's all-time scoring list. With 76 career points, she is tied with 2010 grad
Lexie Hearn. Fitzgerald also moved into a tie for ninth with 28 career goals.
Mowery posted six saves in the setback, while her Dickinson counterpart finished with 10 stops.
Shots were even at 16 apiece, while Gettysburg held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.
Gettysburg returns home to face Washington College Saturday at 1 p.m.
