Jeff Schaefer (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) scored in the 87th minute, but the Gettysburg College men's soccer team came up a goal short in a 2-1 Centennial Conference (CC) loss at Johns Hopkins University Wednesday evening.

The Bullets (5-2-1, 2-1 CC), who suffered their first conference loss of the season, saw their six-game unbeaten streak come to an end.

Gettysburg held a 21-9 shot advantage, but Bryan See turned aside eight shots for Hopkins (6-2-2, 1-2 CC).

Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) finished with five saves for the Bullets.

The physical contest featured a combined 27 fouls (JHU 15, GC 12) and five yellow cards (JHU 4, GC 1).

In a game played in wet conditions, the Blue Jays jumped to an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice over the opening 20 minutes. Arden Chew gave the hosts a 1-0 lead when he converted off a corner kick 4:25 into the contest before Liam Moylan scored off a rebound 16 minutes later.

The Bullets were knocking on the door throughout the half, outshooting Hopkins 12-6 while hitting three posts. However, See made four saves and it was a 2-0 game at the break.

Gettysburg continued to threaten in the second half, when it outshot the hosts 9-3. But See made four additional saves before defender Max Song cleared a shot of the foot of sophomore
Kingsley Nzekwe (Enugu State, Nigeria/New Garden Friends School [N.C.]) that was headed for the net in the 86th minute. Schaefer followed up with a rebound, but it was stopped by See.

Schaefer finally broke through for the Bullets, taking a direct kick from junior
Lucas Weissman (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and heading it in from the left post for his first collegiate goal.

Raffaele Mazzone (Nottingham, Md./Loyola Blakefield) attempted a potential game-tying shot in the 88th minute but had it saved by See.
