First-Half Goals Lift Gettysburg

Gettysburg earns fifth shutout of the season

Alexa Bushey scored the second goal of the game for the Bullets at Frostburg State.
Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. – Sophomores Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) each scored a first-half goal while classmate Kiera Loftus (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) made six saves as the Gettysburg College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 non-conference victory at Frostburg State University Wednesday evening.

The Bullets (6-2) earned their second-straight shutout and their fifth of the season. They also picked up their first victory over the Bobcats (4-6) since 2013 after a 2-2 tie last season and a 1-0 loss in 2014.

The win gave Gettysburg head coach Matt Garrett his 99th career victory.

Esposito provided the Orange and Blue all the offense they would need when she struck in the 16th minute. Junior Maddie Heaney (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) provided the spark when she took a shot that was saved by starting keeper Karen Belteton, and Esposito followed up with the rebound for her third goal of the season.

Bushey added an insurance tally for Gettysburg in the 43rd minute, launching a shot in transition from 35 yards out for her first goal of the season and second of her career.

In the meantime, Loftus turned aside all five Bobcats shots on goal in the opening half. She made a pair of key stops in the 40th minute with her team nursing a 1-0 lead, rushing to the top the box to deflect a shot on a breakaway, then knocking away the rebound as well.

The Bullets held a 6-5 edge in shots during the opening period.

In a defensive-minded second half, both teams attempted just three shots and one shot on goal apiece. Loftus made an additional save to register her fourth shutout of the season.

Gettysburg finished with advantages in shots (9-8) and corner kicks (6-1).

The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Haverford College at 1 p.m.
