Farese Nets Game-Winner as Bullets Top Susquehanna

Bullets Push Winning Streak to Five

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior Michael Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored the game-winning goal with eight minutes left, lifting the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory at Susquehanna Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made three saves to earn his third shutout of the season for the Bullets (10-2), ranked 24th in the latest D3soccer.com Top-25. Gettysburg has now won five games in a row for the second time this season and has exceeded its win total from last season. The Bullets have also posted their best record through 12 matches since the 2002 squad was 10-0-2.

Matt Ellingworth stopped six shots for the River Hawks (4-8-2).

Farese netted an unassisted tally in the 82nd minute, striking inside the box on a ball that had deflected off a Susquehanna defender. It was the third career goal for Farese and his first game-winner.

Gettysburg doubled up Susquehanna in shots (14-7); however, the Bullets held a slim 8-7 surplus in the opening half. But Keane came up big right from the start, making his first two saves in the game's opening three minutes. He registered his final stop of the night in the 39th minute and the two sides headed to the intermission tied 0-0.

The Bullets dug in defensively in the second half, when it did not allow a single shot. In the meantime, Gettysburg put a pair of shots on frame early in the period, but attempts from sophomore Jeff Schaefer (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and freshman Paul Sampson (Lagos, Nigeria/Holderness School [N.H.]) were saved by Ellingworth, setting up Farese's late heroics.

Gettysburg resumes its schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Dickinson in a Centennial Conference match starting at 7 p.m.
