ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore
Charlotte Cenatiempo (Weston, Conn./Weston) scored the game-winning goal with just 1:12 left in the second overtime, and the Gettysburg College women's soccer team earned a big 1-0 victory at Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday evening.
With the win, the Bullets (7-4-2, 5-2 CC) now find themselves in third place in the Centennial Conference standings with three conference games remaining.
It was the fifth overtime game of the season for Gettysburg, which is now 2-1-2 when playing bonus soccer.
With a tie just over a minute away, Gettysburg received a corner kick. Sophomore
Brooke Priddy (Darnestown, Md./Bullis School) sent the ball into the box, and it was deflected by a defender to Cenatiempo, who quickly rifled a shot high into the net for her third goal of the season and her first career game-winner.
The Bullets outshot the Mules 17-11 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) made six saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season for Gettysburg while Libby Juliano turned aside 10 shots for Muhlenberg (4-7-2, 2-3-2 CC).
Both teams had plenty of scoring chances in the first half, when Gettysburg held a 7-3 shot advantage. But that's when Juliano made four of her saves and Sammon stopped three shots, including one with just seconds on the clock.
Both teams attempted six shots in the second stanza, and Juliano registered another four saves for the Mules. Sammon collected two more saves in the second half.
Both teams managed two shots in the first 10-minute overtime period, when Juliano made her final two saves and Sammon stopped her last shot.
Gettysburg took the only two shots in the second overtime, including one from junior
Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) that was blocked, setting up the Bullets' go-ahead corner.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, when they host Susquehanna in a non-conference tilt at 4 p.m.
