SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore scored one goal in each half and the 23rd-ranked Garnet handed the Gettysburg College women's soccer team a 2-0 setback in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday evening.
The hosts outshot the Bullets 22-6, but freshman goalie
Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) made six saves for the Bullets (8-5-2, 5-3 CC), who enter the final week of the regular season holding the fifth and final Centennial Conference playoff spot.
Sammon was challenged often by Swarthmore (12-3, 6-2) in the opening half, but she racked up five of her saves in the period, including several of the highlight-reel variety. She capped the stanza with back-to-back rejections, colliding with the post while making her final stop. Katie Dougherty managed to score in the 17th minute, however, and Swarthmore led 1-0 at the half.
After outshooting the Bullets 9-4 over the opening 45 minutes, the Garnet continued its offensive pressure in the second half, when it held a 13-2 shot advantage. However, only two of Swarthmore's shots were on target during the stretch. But the Garnet broke through with an insurance tally in the 80th minute on a goal by Sophia Stills.
Gettysburg's defense held the Centennial Conference's leading scorer, Marin McCoy, scoreless on four shots. McCoy entered the night with 15 goals.
The Bullets close the regular season with a pair of Centennial Conference home matches, taking on 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before facing Dickinson on Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
