JeanCharles Caps Comeback Win at Juniata

Freshman tailback scores winning touchdown in final seconds

HUNTINGDON, Pa.  – Freshman running back Reggie JeanCharles (Galloway, N.J./Holy Spirit) carried the ball 47 yards to the end zone with 19 seconds left to finish off a fourth-quarter comeback and lead Gettysburg College to a 42-35 victory over Juniata College at Knox Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (2-4, 2-3 CC) trailed 35-21 with 10:59 left in the game, but the Bullets rallied for the final 21 points to get past Juniata (2-4, 1-4 CC). JeanCharles finished with a season-high 178 yards on 19 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. Senior quarterback Justin Davidov (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) threw for 256 yards and three scores, while junior Chase Fee (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) racked up 195 all-purpose yards.

The Bullets trailed by as many as 18 in the first half as Eagle quarterback Austin Montgomery completed a trio of long passes for touchdowns. Sophomore Justin Geisel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day School) put Gettysburg on the board with a career-long 41-yard field goal at the beginning of the second quarter and he added a 37-yarder to make it 21-6 with 9:39 remaining in the half.

The visitors cut the margin to 21-13 when Davidov found senior Tanner Morrow (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) in the end zone for a seven-yard reception near the end of the second quarter.

Gettysburg's defense held firm in the third period, stopping a fourth-down conversion try in the red zone and forcing a fumble on another possession. The Bullets tallied the only score at the end of the period as JeanCharles rumbled his way 41 yards on three carries, ending with a 24-dash down the left sideline for the tying score.

The tide turned once again at the start of the fourth quarter as Juniata opened with a pair of touchdowns to jump in front 35-21 with less than 11 minutes remaining.

A 27-yard punt return deep into Juniata territory by senior Ryan Thompson (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) put the Bullets back on the winning path. Gettysburg made the most of the short yardage with Davidov finding senior Andrew Major (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) for a seven-yard touchdown reception.

Gettysburg had 83 yards to cover on its game-tying drive and the team methodically marched down the field in 11 plays. The last marked the visitor's longest passing play of the game as Davidov found sophomore Kevin Benavente (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) on the left side of the field. A quick spin by the wing back left his defender on the ground and he marched in for a 34-yard touchdown to tie the game 35-35.

The Eagles started the next drive in decent position following a 38-yard kickoff return by Shaheed Ross. Juniata didn't get far, however, as three-straight incompletions capped the possession, including one broken up by junior safety Mike McKnight (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin).

The Bullets started the game-winning drive on their own 20-yardline following a touchback on the punt. The team gained positive yardage on its first seven plays and set up on Juniata's 47 with less than 30 seconds remaining.

After grabbing the hand-off from Davidov, JeanCharles broke to his left through a huge gap created by Major and juniors Chris Chick (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Trent Seibert (Cape May Court House, N.J./St. Augustine Prep). The first-year tailback left three defenders in his wake on the way to the end zone.

Sophomore Ryan Greene (Easton, Pa./Easton) sacked Montgomery to start Juniata's final drive and an incomplete pass finished out the win.

Gettysburg finished with season bests for rushing yards (276) and total offense (542). The Bullets also did not allow a sack for the third time this season as junior Alex Scott (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame), sophomore Ethan Kendzulak (Flemington, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional), senior Ben Bauer (New Providence, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), junior Matt Yoder (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal), Seibert, and Chick dominated play at the line.

Junior Nick Rella (Denville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) tallied 65 yards on 14 carries for the Bullets. Davidov completed a season-high 21 passes to 10 different receivers, including five to Fee for 56 yards. Fee added 47 yards on three punt returns, 83 yards on five kickoff returns, and one rush for nine yards.

McKnight posted 13 tackles, a forced fumble, and picked up two pass break-ups, giving him a league-high 13 pass break-ups this fall. Junior Jake Skinner (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) added nine tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, while classmate Logan Aikey (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) posted two tackles for a loss among his six stops. Freshman Thomeir Richardson (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) picked up his fourth fumble recovery of the season, which is the most by a Gettysburg player in 29 years.

Montgomery finished with 380 yards passing and four touchdowns for Juniata. Two of his scores went to Daulton Snyder who posted 126 receiving yards, while another went to Justin Helsel who tallied 174 yards on six catches. Matt Lehr racked up 92 rush yards and a touchdown and Mitchell Shober led the defense with 11 tackles.

Gettysburg joins the rest of the conference for the upcoming bye week. The Bullets return to action at Johns Hopkins University on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
