WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team battled McDaniel into overtime, but the host Green Terror scored four minutes into the extra session to come away with a 1-0 victory in the first-round match of the Centennial Conference (CC) tournament Wednesday afternoon.
The fifth-seeded Bullets close out the year at 9-7-2, marking the team's eighth winning season in the last nine years. Gettysburg was making its eighth-straight appearance in the Centennial Conference playoffs.
Fourth-seeded McDaniel (12-5-1) moves on to the CC semifinals on Saturday to face top-seeded and 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
Making her third career start, sophomore goalie
Brittany Smith (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) turned in an outstanding performance for Gettysburg. Facing a 20-shot attack, she made a career-high eight saves, including two stops in overtime. Over her final two matches of the season, she allowed just one goal in 184 minutes.
Sydney Kelly registered two stops to earn the shutout for the Green Terror.
McDaniel outshot the Bullets 5-0 in the first half, but Smith recorded two saves. The hosts then turned up the offensive pressure in the second stanza, when they outshot the Orange and Blue 12-3. However, that's when Smith turned aside four shots, including one with just over a minute remaining to help send the match into overtime.
The Terror took the only three shots in OT, but Smith kept the Bullets in it with her final two stops and made a leaping deflection over the crossbar for her final save. But on the ensuing corner kick, Lindsey Farrell came up with the ball at the back post and sent a pass out to the top of the box, where Alyssa Johnston drilled a shot through traffic and into the top-left corner of the net.
Despite the loss, Gettysburg's senior class of
