GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) scored 18 points while senior forward
Matt England (Warrington, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) posted his second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Gettysburg College men's basketball team to a 60-54 victory over Hunter College in the consolation game of the 27th annual Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament.
The Bullets (1-1) outscored Hunter 17-5 to start the game, then held off a second-half run by the Hawks in which they came back to tie the game twice.
Lord shot 4-for-6 from 3-point range and finished just one point shy of his career-high.
England, who posted 22 points and nine rebounds in the tournament opener, earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the second time in three years.
Junior center
Luke Cooper (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) added eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Bullets, who were playing Hunter for the first time ever.
The win marked career victory No. 390 for Gettysburg head coach
George Petrie.
Danny Fusco led Hunter (0-2) with 18 points.
Moravian College rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit for a 96-89 overtime win over Bridgewater (Va.) College in the championship game. Moravian's Oneil Holder was named MVP after posting 27 points and 18 rebounds in the title match. Moravian's C.J. Barnes, Bridgewater's Dimetri Chambers and A.J. Horde, and Hunter's Amer Lukac joined England on the all-tournament team.
Four different players scored a point over Gettysburg's game-opening run, with junior guard
Alec Warren (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) capping the surge with back-to-back 3-pointers that put the Bullets up by 12 with 11:49 on the clock.
The Hawks pulled to within five late in the half, but an 8-2 surge late in the period pushed Gettysburg's lead back to 11. Fusco split a pair of free throws with four-tenths of second on the clock to make it a 34-24 game at the break.
The two sides traded runs in the second half before Gettysburg pulled away late. Hunter held the Bullets to three points over the opening 4:38 of the period and used a 13-3 run to pull even at 37-all. Gettysburg answered with a 6-0 spurt, only to see the Hawks run off six straight points of their own to make it a 43-43 game with 9:04 showing. However, that's when the Bullets responded with a 7-0 surge that sparked a decisive 15-4 run. Lord knocked down a pair of big 3-pointers over the stretch and capped the outburst with a triple that made it 58-47 with 3:00 left.
Hunter narrowed the gap down to four with 35 seconds left, but it was too little too late and sophomore guard
Joey Carroll (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) iced the win with a pair of free throws four seconds later to set the final score.
Gettysburg plays its Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 8 p.m. in the nightcap of a women's-men's doubleheader.
