MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Gettysburg College softball team closed its spring break with a pair of 2-1 setbacks at the hands of Lycoming College and Division II Mansfield University on Friday.
Gettysburg (8-4) saw its seven-game winning streak come to halt against Lycoming (7-2). The Bullets jumped on the board first as freshman
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) led off the game with a single, stole second base, and came around to score on a single by junior
Wendy Folfas (Westminster, Md./McDonogh School).
The Warriors took advantage of some fielding miscues by Gettysburg in the third inning. Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) struck out the first two batters, but Madison Brown advanced to second as the third strike got away. An error and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with two outs.
Rachael Shady brought home the tying run with an infield single and Kayla Kline scored the go-ahead run on an error. Reilly allowed only on more base-runner over the final four innings and retired the final seven batters, including three by strikeout.
The Bullets threatened to tie the score in the fourth inning, putting each of the first two batters on and eventually loading the bases. Shady worked out of the jam by getting Doi to hit a grounder back to the circle.
Freshman
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic) finished 2-for-3 for Gettysburg. Reilly dropped to 3-3 with the loss. She allowed just three hits and struck out nine.
Against Mansfield, sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) retired the first seven batters she faced. The Mountaineers finally scored in the fourth inning as Laura Lawson led off with a double and scored on a double by Rachael Sterner. Sterner was stranded at second as Clauser picked up a strikeout and groundout to first base to end the frame.
Gettysburg answered in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) stroked a one-out single through the left side of the infield. Folfas followed up with a double to plate the run before the junior was thrown out attempting to stretch the base hit into a triple.
Mansfield scored the winning run in the top of the fifth. The Mountaineers hit three consecutive two-out singles with Lawson plating Deshae Jones for the final run.
Folfas and sophomore
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) each finished 1-for-2 with a walk for the Bullets.
Clauser suffered her first loss of the season (5-1). The sophomore allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday, March 23, at Stevenson University 3 p.m.
