GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team suffered a sweep at the hands of Washington College Sunday afternoon at Bobby Jones Field.
Gettysburg (13-7, 2-2 CC) posted just five hits in a 3-1 loss in the opener with Washington (14-12, 4-2 CC). The Bullets tried to rally from a three-run deficit in the nightcap, but the Shorewomen held on for a 3-2 decision.
The hosts avoided giving up an early run in the first game as freshman center fielder
Liz Cowell (Verona, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) gunned down a runner at the plate in the second inning. Washington found the scoring column in the next frame with Maddie Bennett putting down a perfectly placed bunt in front of home plate to bring home Allyson Meil from third.
Gettysburg tied the game in the fifth inning. Senior
Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) led off with a double and after an error and infield single loaded the bases, senior
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) lofted a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Shorewomen took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues by the Bullets to bring home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Erin Spinden added a two-out double for an insurance run in the seventh.
Junior
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) fell to 5-4 with the loss. Reilly allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts. Abell went 2-for-2.
Taylor Harcum went 2-for-3 with a run and struck out seven for the victory.
In game two, Washington struck for two runs in the top of the third inning. Meil hit a lead-off single to center field and scored on a double by Elaina DiPrimio. DiPrimio came around to score on a single to right-center by Maddie Bennett. The Shorewomen added another run in the top of the sixth on a single by Taylor Harcum.
Gettysburg sliced the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Singles by sophomore
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) and freshman
Mattea Ghaffary (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) set up Misurell for an RBI single. The center fielder mishandled Misurell's hit, allowing the second runner to score.
The Bullets put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh, but a line drive by Abell was snagged by the first baseman Gabby Edwards who alertly doubled up the runner at first.
Sophomore
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) was saddled with her second loss of the year (8-2) after giving up three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and striking out two. Taylor led the offense with a pair of hits.
