GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Senior Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) became just the second player at Gettysburg College to reach 200 career hits in a doubleheader against No. 8 Messiah College at Bobby Jones Field.

Gettysburg (22-11-1) couldn't pull off an upset against Messiah (31-6), dropping the opener 8-1 before coming up short in the nightcap 9-6.

After three scoreless innings in game three, the Falcons put up five runs in the top of the fourth, including two on a double by starting pitcher Carrie Fix.

Abell provided an answer for Gettysburg in the bottom of the inning, driving the ball over the fence in left-center for her first home run of the season and hit No. 199.

Messiah extended the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Abell clinched her milestone with a sharply hit single to center field. The senior joined an elite club in the Centennial Conference record book which includes only Washington College's Lauren Dockrill (221) and Gettysburg's all-time leader Steph Zengel '16 (213).

Game two was more of a slugfest between the two teams. The Bullets scored the first run as lead-off hitter Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) reached on an error and came around to score on a throwing miscue later in the frame. Messiah answered in its next at bat with three run-scoring singles for a 3-1 lead.

Gettysburg worked its way into the lead in the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Mattea Ghaffary (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark) and junior Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary) posted back-to-back RBI singles in the fourth and freshman Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to put the hosts ahead 4-3.

The Bullets nearly escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning after getting a pair of force-outs at home, but Erin Cressman smacked a two-run single to left-center to keep the inning going. Amber Bingaman followed up with a hard liner off the pitcher which allowed two more runners to score and push the lead to 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, Amanda Jones posted her third hit of the game to bring in two more runs and give Messiah a 9-4 lead.

Gettysburg closed the game with two runs in its final at bat, the first scoring on an outfield error and the second coming home on a double by senior Sam Misurell (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop George Ahr).

Misurell finished 2-for-4, while Leonardo went 2-for-2 with a walk.

Gettysburg closes its conference schedule against Muhlenberg College at home this Saturday at 1 p.m.
