Bullets Open Classic with Pair of Wins

Gettysburg downs Arcadia, Bethany

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Freshman Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) recorded 31 kills and 31 digs  in her opening day of collegiate competition to lead Gettysburg College to a pair of victories over Arcadia University and Bethany College at the Battlefield Classic on Friday.

Stranick went for 13 kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21) victory over Arcadia (1-1) to begin the day. Senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added a career-high 12 kills and classmates Stephanie Blair (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) logged 42 assists and 20 digs, respectively.

The Bullets trailed throughout the opening set with Arcadia. In the second frame, the hosts broke a 10-10 tie with three-straight points, including two kills by Stranick. The lead reached six (20-14) on another kill by the first-year. The momentum carried over to the third set as Gettysburg broke out to a 5-0 lead before fighting off a rally mid-set. The Bullets fell behind in the fourth set against the Knights before pulling away late and sealing the win on a kill by Weikert.

Gettysburg defeated Bethany (0-2) 3-1 (25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19) in its second contest of the day. A sluggish start saw the Bullets trailing for the most the opener, including 20-18. The home team ran off the next seven points as Stranick and senior Lauren Godshalk (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) each posted a pair of kills.

Gettysburg dominated the second set and broke out to an early lead in the third, but the Bison mounted a furious comeback and tallied eight of the final 11 points to secure a win. The Bullets left nothing to chance in the fourth set, bursting out with six of the first eight points and leading by as many as nine in the set.

Stranick was even more dominant in her second outing, piling up 18 kills and 19 digs. Sophomore Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) posted nine kills and Weikert added eight kills and 14 digs. Blair dished out 37 assists and put up 18 digs, while Gilbert racked up 15 digs. Sophomore Melissa Tringali (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) recorded 11 digs.

Gettysburg faces two more foes on day two of the Battlefield Classic Saturday. The team opens with Gallaudet University at 10 a.m. before facing former Bullet Amanda Krampf '10 and her Kenyon College squad at 2 p.m.
