SALISBURY, Md. – Senior
Patrick Santini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) scored his second game-winning goal in as many days, striking for a penalty kick in the 109th minute to hand the Gettysburg College men's soccer team a 1-0 double-overtime victory over host Salisbury University on Saturday.
With the win, the Bullets claimed the Elmer Lord Memorial Tournament title after finishing the weekend 2-0.
Sophomore midfielder
Jimmy Evangelos (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) was selected as the tournament MVP for Gettysburg (2-0), which allowed just one goal over 198 minutes.
Senior
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) made two saves in goal for the Bullets to earn his first career shutout.
The rain-soaked affair marked the first-ever meeting between Gettysburg and Salisbury in men's soccer.
The two sides were just a minute and 40 seconds away from a tie when Salisbury was whistled for a foul inside the box. Santini then drilled in his first career PK and his second career golden goal. He also scored the game-winner in the first overtime of a 2-1 victory over Ursinus on Sept. 19, 2015.
Santini also netted the go-ahead tally on Friday in the Bullets' 2-1 victory over St. Mary's (Md.), and he has now scored in three straight games, dating back to last season.
Gettysburg outshot the Sea Gulls 7-2 in the opening half, but that's when Salisbury goalie Trevor Brookhart made three of his four saves on the day. Karen helped keep the hosts off the scoreboard with a save in the 26th minute.
Salisbury (0-2) found a spark in the second half, when it held a 5-1 shot advantage. But Karen stopped the Sea Gulls' lone shot on goal in the 54th minute.
Neither side took a shot in the first extra session, and both teams managed just one shot in the second OT, including Santini's game-winner.
Gettysburg finished with slim advantages in both shots (9-8) and corner kicks (8-7).
Gettysburg plays its home opener on Friday, when it takes on Stevenson University in a non-conference tilt starting at 7 p.m.
