WESTMINSTER, Md. – Freshman
Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute to lift Gettysburg College to a 4-3 overtime victory at McDaniel College in Centennial Conference field hockey action on Wednesday.
Playing in its fourth consecutive overtime contest, Gettysburg (2-4, 1-1 CC) pulled out the win thanks to Bertrando, who netted her second game-winning overtime goal in three games. As the minutes counted down in the 15-minute extra session, Bertrando controlled the ball inside the arc, dribbled through two defenders, and slipped a shot inside the left post. It was her fifth goal of the season, all of which have come in the last three outings.
Gettysburg held significant advantages in shots (24-11) and penalty corners (14-3), but each time the Bullets seized the lead, McDaniel (1-6, 0-2 CC) found an answer. Sophomore
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) opened the scoring in the fifth minute, but Megan Quattrone slapped in her own rebound five minutes later to tie the game.
Freshman
Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored her second goal of the year in the 26th minute, knocking home a rebound following a strike by senior
Jamie Relin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) that was stopped by Elizabeth Collyer.
The Green Terror tied the game on a goal by Emily Houska with 48 seconds left in the first half.
Gettysburg pressed the advantage to start the final period with three shots on goal before Bertrando scored her first goal in the 41st minute. McDaniel didn't waste any time tying the game with Gabrielle Yore converting six minutes later.
The Bullets were turned away on five shots by goalie Paige Ford in the final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, McDaniel nearly ended the contest in the final minute of regulation, but a shot by Quattrone was saved by senior
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) and the ensuing putback by Houska was knocked away by junior
Brooke Matthews (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) for a defensive save.
In the overtime period, McDaniel put the first shot on goal and Mowery was right there to stop it. Quattrone and Yore each had point-blank opportunities 73rd minute, but the Gettysburg goalie saved the former and freshman
Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) swatted away the latter to preserve the score.
Gettysburg controlled the action over the final seven minutes before Bertrando's winner, forcing a pair of penalty corners and three shots.
Mowery finished with five saves for the Bullets. Bertrando paced the team with seven shots, while Soares, Relin, and Cavicchio each tallied three attempts.
Collyer and Ford combined for 15 saves for McDaniel.
