GETTYSBURG, Pa. – No overtime was needed this time around for the Gettysburg College field hockey team as the Bullets scored the final four goals in a 4-1 decision over Stevenson University Tuesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
After playing five consecutive overtime contests, Gettysburg (4-4) needed just 70 minutes to finish off Stevenson (4-4). The victory was the third in a row for the Bullets.
The Mustangs opened the scoring when Tanner Ridgely found a seam past senior goalie
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) in the 11th minute.
Freshman
Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) provided the game's next two scores. The first-year found an opening and rocketed a shot into the goal in the 28th minute to tie the score. Less than two minutes later, Bertrando took the pass from classmate
Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) off a penalty corner and blasted another shot past the Stevenson goalie for her third two-goal outing in her last four games.
Gettysburg tacked on another score before the end of the period as senior
Jamie Relin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) deflected a pass from senior
Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry) into the cage for her first career goal in the 32nd minute.
The Bullets kept up the heat offensively with six shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes of the second half. The Mustangs weathered the storm with five saves by Maia Harper and one by defender Ashley Meyer.
Gettysburg set up its final goal with a flurry in front of the cage in the 55th minute. A shot by sophomore
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) was saved by Harper, but the ensuing putback hit a defender's body at the goal line. Senior
Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) took care of the penalty stroke to make it 4-1.
Stevenson was unable to break Gettysburg's defensive posture thanks in large part to Mowery, who tallied 10 of her season-high 14 saves in the second half. The senior goalie sealed the victory by knocking away a shot by Marissa Hoffman on a penalty corner with about a minute to go.
Each team managed 22 shots, while Stevenson came up with one more penalty corner (9-8). Soares led Gettysburg with four shots, freshman
Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) logged five attempts, and Bertrando posted four.
Gettysburg returns to its Centennial Conference schedule against Bryn Mawr College at home this Friday at 3:30 p.m.
