GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The University of Scranton used a late defensive stand to pull away for a 63-54 victory over Gettysburg in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening in Bream Gym.
Â
The Bullets (3-9) led 50-46 with 6:45 left, but the Royals (4-8) allowed just four points the rest of the way.
Â
Senior forward
Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) made 8 of 11 shots and scored a season-high 17 points for Gettysburg, which held Scranton to 39.2 percent shooting, including 22.2 percent (4-for-18) from 3-point range. Sophomore guard
Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) contributed 12 points and seven rebounds for the Bullets while sophomore guard
Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) dished out eight assists.
Â
Matthew Mancuso posted 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Scranton, which shot 82.6 percent (19-for-23) at the foul line. Mitch Cross added 17 points off the bench while Kyle DeVerna registered 15 points.Â
The Bullets held Ethan Danzig, Scranton's leading scorer entering the night (14.8 ppg) scoreless.
Â
The two sides were competing in their ninth all-time match-up but the first at Gettysburg since Jan. 16, 1960.
Â
It was a back-and-forth first half, which featured four ties and six lead changes. The Bullets enjoyed their largest lead of the opening stanza when Stewart converted back-to-back lay-ups to make it 15-11 with 12:19 on the clock.
Â
Scranton came back to take the lead (21-18) on a 3-pointer from Cross with 7:01 on the clock, and the Royals took their biggest advantage of the period (29-23) after a Kyle DeVerna lay-in with 4:04 showing. However, the Bullets scored on four of their last five possessions of the half, including a fast-break lay-up from freshman forward
Chris Jack (Rechange-sur-Mess, Luxembourg/Hun School) that made it 31-30. However, a Mancuso lay-up with six ticks showing gave the visitors a 33-30 lead at the half.
Â
The Bullets shut out Scranton for nearly four minutes to start the second half, but managed only three points over the same stretch. But the Orange and Blue reclaimed the lead (38-37) on a triple from junior guard
Alec Warren (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) with 14:37 left and wouldn't trail again for nearly nine minutes.
Â
Gettysburg led 48-43 after a lay-up from Antolini with 9:11 left, but the Bullets wouldn't score again until Stewart converted inside to hand his team its late four-point edge. Scranton answered with a 10-0 run, which was broken up by a free throw from Duffey with 1:14 left that made it 56-51. However, the Royals pulled away by scoring the next seven points before Jack set the final score with a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
Â
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, when they visit 12th-ranked Swarthmore at 1 p.m.
