Big First Half Lifts Men’s Hoops

Bullets Jump to 25-Point Halftime Lead

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Four Bullets scored in double figures and Gettysburg used a big first half to earn an 89-73 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Tuesday evening in Bream Gym.

Gettysburg (4-9, 2-4 CC) outscored the Fords 52-27 in the first half and finished with its highest scoring total of the year. The Bullets also shot a season-high 61.3 percent from the floor, including 40.0 percent marksmanship (8-for-20) from 3-point territory. In addition, the Orange and Blue nearly doubled (40-23) Haverford in rebounding.

Senior forward Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) scored a game-high 20 points for Gettysburg, tying the second-highest scoring total of his career. Junior center Luke Cooper (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) pumped in a career-high 19 points on near-perfect shooting, knocking down 7-of-8 field goals. Sophomore guard Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) added 16 points and eight rebounds while shooting 6-for-8, and senior forward Matt England (Warrington, Pa./Holy Ghost) just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) contributed seven points and six assists.

Joe Scibelli paced Haverford (5-8, 1-5 CC) with 19 points off the bench.

The Bullets trailed just once – when the Fords scored 12 seconds into the contest to go up 2-0. But Gettysburg ran off the next 12 points to assume a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the night.

Haverford pulled to within 15-10 a minute and a half later, but that's when the Bullets used a 19-4 run spanning the next seven minutes to push their lead to 20 (34-14). After the Fords trimmed the deficit down to 13, Gettysburg answered with a decisive 26-2 outburst to extend its advantage to 27 just before the end of the half.

The hosts shot 61.3 percent in the opening period, when seven different Bullets connected for a 3-pointer. Cooper scored 13 of his points in the stanza, when he shot 5-for-6 from the field.

Gettysburg continued to pull away early in the second half, outscoring Haverford 11-0 to open the period as the lead ballooned to 36. However, the Fords refused to go away and gradually chipped away at the deficit. The Fords made it 13-point game (83-70) with 2:51 left, but the comeback would run out of time as they were unable to draw any closer the rest of the way.

The Bullets jump right back into action on Thursday, when they visit Muhlenberg at 8 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
