Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Caputo Posts 10 Saves at No. 11 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMOREJunior Jillian Caputo (Haddonfield Township, N.J./Haddonfield Township) posted 10 saves and helped Gettysburg College hold No. 11 Johns Hopkins University scoreless in the opening half, but the Blue Jays picked up two goals early in the second period to get by the Bullets 2-0 in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Homewood Field on Wednesday.

Gettysburg (6-9, 3-6 CC) held conference front-runner Johns Hopkins (15-1, 9-0 CC) out of the scoring column in the first 35 minutes despite facing a barrage of shots. Caputo set the defensive tone early on with a pair of stops on back-to-back shots by Abby Birk and Michael Corvi just past the three-minute mark.

The Gettysburg goalie picked up three more saves later in the opening period, while junior Sam Nicol (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) posted a defensive save to preserve the scoreless deadlock.

Johns Hopkins went to work early in the final period. Following a stop by Caputo and another defensive save by Nicol, Katie McErlean ripped a shot from the top of the circle for the opening tally in the 38th minute. Just over two minutes later, Corvi connected on an insurance goal to make it 2-0.

Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) nearly scored following a penalty corner 45 minutes into the contest, but Blue Jay goalie Jodie Baris stopped the shot.

Johns Hopkins finished with a 21-3 lead in shots and a 4-3 edge in corners.

Gettysburg's postseason hopes potentially rest on its final regular-season game at Dickinson College (5-11, 4-5 CC) this Saturday at noon. A victory combined with two losses by Washington College (4-12, 4-4 CC) this week would clinch a playoff spot for the Orange and Blue.
