VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Gettysburg College baseball team received two complete game performances and their offense knocked out 29 hits as they defeated Marywood University 13-0 and 9-3 in a double-header sweep on Friday afternoon in Vero Beach, Fla.
In game one, the Bullets (3-8) jumped out to an early lead when sophomores
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa. /Hershey),
Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J. /Princeton Day) and
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) all hit RBIs to go up 3-0 over the Marywood (5-5) in the first inning.
That's all senior
Brad DeMartino (Westfield, N.J. /Westfield) would need as he was completely dominate on the mound firing nine strikeouts and holding the Pacers to one hit in a seven inning complete game shutout.
Despite the dominate performance by DeMartino, the Bullets offense did not let down as they tallied 15 hits in the 13-0 victory with five separate Bullets collecting multiple hits on the game, including senior
Chuck Probst (North Bend, Pa. /Bucktail) who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a triple.
Ryan Augustus finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a double.
Joe Giovinco went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles. Sophomore
Tyler Mitchell (Arnold, Md. /Broadneck) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs while freshman
Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J. /Seton Hall Prep) went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and triple.
In the nightcap, the Bullets received another complete game pitching performance. This time it was from freshman
Erik Wortmann (Garden City, N.Y. /Garden City) who held the Pacers to three runs on six hits while striking out five in a 9-3 victory.
Gettysburg once again jumped out of a 3-0 first inning lead. Freshman
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass. /Westfield) got the scoring started when he ripped a double to bring in the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Augustus plated a run with a single to go up 2-0 and then was followed by Giovinco who hit sac fly to score the third run of the inning.
Augustus finished 4-for-8 on the day with four RBIs while Giovinco finished 4-for-6 with three RBIs
Marywood tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs on three hits to make the game 3-3. The Bullets took the lead right back in the top of the fifth when Augustus hit his second RBI of the game to score Probst.
In the following inning, the Bullets scored five runs on four hits to go up 9-3.
Tyler Mitchell, who finished 5-for-7 with three RBIs on the day, started off the big inning by hitting an RBI single. Freshman
Harrison Quimby (Wilmington, De. /Tower Hill) was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to make the score 5-3. Mitchell would then score on a wild pitch before sophomore
Banks Northington (Charlottesville, Va. /Charlottesville) smacked an RBI double to score two more runs and give the Bullets the 9-3 advantage.
The Bullets finished the game with 14 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance by
Ryan LaCoe.
Gettysburg will finish up their 7 day, 10-game trip to Florida tomorrow when they take on Norwich University in a double-header starting at 10:00 a.m.
