Hornets hold on for 2-1 victory

WINCHESTER, Va.The Gettysburg College field hockey team was upended 2-1 in its season-opener at Shenandoah University Friday night.

Making her first start in goal, junior Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) turned away a pair of shots in the opening nine minutes of the game for Gettysburg (0-1). The defense turned to offense as sophomore Allison Cavicchio (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) slapped in the team's first goal of the season off a feed from sophomore Arden Scheetz (Phoenix, Md./Notre Dame Prep) in the 14th minute.

Sophomore Maeve Dwyer (Skillman, N.J.Montgomery) kept the Hornets off the board with a defensive save at 18:05, but the hosts would eventually work their way to a score. Following a defensive save by Megan Stevens, Shenandoah (1-0) was awarded a penalty stroke and Taylor Hayes converted the shot to make it 1-1 at 26:48.

Caputo came out with four saves to open the final period of play, including on back-to-back hits by Stevens and Kayla Alderman in the 39th minute. Kelsey Jones eventually found a seam past the Gettysburg goalie for what would turn out to be the game-winner in the 50th minute.
