BALTIMORE, Md. –Freshman
Oladayo Thomas (Larchmont, N.Y./The Masters) came through for the Gettysburg College men's soccer team as he belted the game-winning goal to knock off nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University in overtime on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 2-1.
Before today's match, Johns Hopkins held the 7-0-2 mark over the last nine meetings. The last time the Bullets defeated the Blue Jays was during the 2009 season.
Gettysburg (4-2-1 overall, 2-0 Centennial Conference) wins its third consecutive match, while 24th-ranked by D3soccer.com, Johns Hopkins lost its second straight match (5-3 overall, 0-2 Centennial Conference).
In the wet and slippery conditions at Homewood Field, neither team produced many shots on goal as both teams combined for a total of five in the first-half.
Despite the weather conditions, the Bullets powered through in the opening half as freshman
Connor Fife (Newtown, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) took advantage of a defensive mistake and shot to the left side of the box for the goal.
Shortly after, a Blue Jays player received a red card, making the hosts down one player for the remainder of the match.
In the second-half, Johns Hopkins scored the equalizer 18 minutes into the frame to make it a 1-1 match.
The Bullets had an opportunity to take the match in regulation off a free kick as Thomas headed the ball, but the Blue Jays goalkeeper made the crucial save.
It was an unbelievable finish for Gettysburg as Thomas tacked on the game-winner a minute and thirty-seven seconds into overtime as freshman
Jack Carroll (Leonia, N.J./Bergen Catholic) dished the ball perfectly from the right side, allowing Thomas to kick the ball into the middle of the box for his third goal in two games.
The Bullets ended the match outshooting the Blue Jays 12-7, with six shots being on goal, but the hosts held the 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made two saves for the Bullets.
Gettysburg returns to the pitch on Wednesday when they welcome McDaniel College at 7p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
