Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Miesemer scores game-winner in Women’s Soccer Double Overtime Victory against Stevenson

Gettysburg, Pa. – Senior Lauren Miesemer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to lift the Gettysburg College women's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Stevenson University on Wednesday night at a sweltering Clark Field. This is the fourth year in a row that the Bullets have defeated the Mustangs.

The Bullets have gone into three straight overtime matches to start the 2018 campaign. The last time that happened was during the 2008 season.

Stevenson found the back of the net early as Bridget Heist scored with 15:35 on the clock in the first half. The Bullets battled as they went on to tally back-to-back goals at the 21:44 and 34:58 markers, respectively. The first came from freshman Molly O'Shea (Reading, Pa./Wilson) who beat out the defender and shot to the left of the frame to register her first career goal. Senior Virginia Sanford (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) was able to find senior Samantha Esposito (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) who took advantage of the open look and drilled the ball in the net for her first goal of the season to put Gettysburg ahead, 2-1. The lead did not last long as Stevenson scored off a rebound from a free kick two minutes later to make it a 2-2 deadlock. The scored stayed at 2-2 heading into halftime.

The Mustangs retook the lead 10 minutes into the second half as Marissa Inglisa kicked the ball over the goalkeepers head for the score. The Bullets pulled even when senior Alexa Bushey (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) struck in the 78th minute, off a pass from freshman Erika Muskus (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood). In the final 12 minutes of regulation, Gettysburg had four shot opportunities, while Stevenson did not have any.

The Bullets had multiple scoring opportunities in the first overtime as they outshot the Mustangs 7-1, with many of the shots just nearly missing the net.

In the second overtime, Miesemer scored the game-winner at the 104th minute as she faked out the Stevenson defender and shot to the lower right of the frame to lift the Bullets to a thrilling, exciting, and nerve-wracking victory.

Gettysburg outshot Stevenson by a whopping 31-11.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kerry Sammon (Pearl River, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Angels) ended the contest with four saves.

Gettysburg returns to non-conference action on Saturday, when they visit Elizabethtown College at 7 p.m.
