Four Gettysburg teams look to raise money for children’s home

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Four Gettysburg College athletic programs will set out to raise money to support the rebuilding efforts in the Bahama Islands following the devastating impact of Hurricane Dorian last month with a collective fundraising campaign on Oct. 30.

Field hockey, volleyball, and men's and women's soccer will seek donations in conjunction with their home contests next week. Donation tables will be set up at each of the four games scheduled for Oct. 30 and fans will receive "#BahamasStrong" bracelets.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help rebuild the Grand Bahama Children's Home, which was destroyed by Dorian. Monetary donations will also be accepted to help send supplies to the two islands hit hardest by the storm, Abaco and Grand Bahama Island. Dorian, a category five hurricane, hit the Bahamas on Sept. 1 with 200+ mph hour winds and a storm surge that reached 20 feet, nearly flooding the entirety of Grand Bahama Island.

Hurricane Dorian killed at least 61 people in the Bahamas and preliminary estimates put the cost of damage at more than $7 billion. Across the Bahamas, the storm left at least 70,000 people homeless.

"I have been a part-time resident of Grand Bahama Island for the past 20 years," said assistant field hockey coach Ashley Mowery. "I grew up there and my family and best friends are the great Bahamian people. Their sense of community and 'everyone is family' way of life is something I cherish. I'm so grateful for my fellow colleagues and teams to be helping with this cause. Let's rebuild the Bahamas!"
