How It Happened…
- First Half: Williams, the three-time national champions in the last four years, scored a goal in the opening four minutes as Tolliver dribbled through the defense and shot from left of box. The Ephs controlled the action for much of the early part of the first half and maintained their one-goal advantage, outshooting Gettysburg 12-5 during the period. The Bullets looked to work their way back into the match, finding open looks at the cage shortly after from Cenatiempo and senior Tatum Lareau (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe), as each booted a shot on goal, but both were turned aside by Taylor. The Bullets defense made some outstanding saves in the period as Cunningham finished with six saves and freshman Naomi Joseph (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) stopped a shot from going into the cage at the 33:49 marker. About a minute later, Lynch headed the eventually final tally off a corner kick from Erika Jung.
- Second Half: The Ephs pounded four shots in a four-minute span in the early part of the final half, but the Bullets defense did a spectacular job and halted any chances for Williams to add to the lead. The best opportunity Gettysburg saw at the cage was from senior Brooke Priddy (Darnestown, Md./Bullis School) as she drilled a shot on goal at 56:48 marker, but Taylor denied it. Williams will face No. 5 MIT in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday.
By the Numbers
- Williams finished with the 24-6 shot advantage and the 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
- Gettysburg concluded the season with its highest victory total since 2014, made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014, and earned their first national ranking since 2014.
- The Bullets played their fifth nationally-ranked opponent.
