WINCHESTER, Va. – The Gettysburg College softball team swept non-conference opponent Shenandoah University in the season opener on the road Thursday evening. The Bullets took game one 18-11 and claimed the nightcap 9-0 in five innings.
Gettysburg (2-0) started game one with an 18-11 decision, marking the team's highest scoring output since a 19-0 decision over Eastern Nazarene in 2010. The Bullets did most of the damage in the third inning (seven runs).
A triple to right field by junior
Rachel Julie (Elmsford, N.Y./Briarcliff) started the wave of momentum in game one for the Bullets as the team cruised to an early 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. The Hornets (2-5) struck back as they tallied an inning high five runs in the bottom of the second to slice the deficit down to one (6-5).
Gettysburg opened the third with back-to-back outs, but then erupted seven runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) doubled sending Julie, junior
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and junior
Taylor Doi (Foster City, Calif./San Mateo) crossed the plate for the first three runs. An RBI single, an RBI double, and run scored by senior
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) pushed the advantage 13-5.
The Bullets added on three more runs in the fourth with an RBI double by senior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) and a two RBI single by Blasius. Shenandoah collected three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to come within six.
Sophomore
Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) blasted her first career two-run homer in the top of the seventh to seal the deal for the Bullets.
Baker went 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBIs, and a double. Julie finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored, two RBIs, and a triple, while Colline notched three hits, four RBIs, two runs scored, a double, and a homer.
Senior
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) earned the win in game one, pitching all seven innings and striking out seven.
Allie Schey went 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs, and two triples to lead Shenandoah.
After going two innings without a score in game two, the Bullets registered four in the top of the third inning. Baker's double sent Jonik to home plate for the first tally. Taylor grounded out to the third basmen on the next at bat, but then back-to-back RBI singles from Colline and Blasius extended the lead to three. Sophomore
Jessica Ken-Kwofie (Westfield, N.J./Kent Place School) notched the final run as she stole home.
The Bullets added on four more runs in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI double by Julie, an RBI by Baker, and Colline's two-run dinger.
Baker concluded the scoring with a single to first base, allowing Julie to cross home plate in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher
Skylar Spinner (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) had an outstanding first career game for the Bullets she as tossed two strikeouts, allowed only one hit, and no runs in five innings of work.
Baker and Colline each registered two hits and a team-high three RBIs. Baker finished with a double and Colline added a home run.
Julie went 2-for-3 at the plate, tallied a double, a triple, and an RBI.
Gettysburg embarks on another non-conference doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
