GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team dropped a Centennial Conference decision in the opener, but the Bullets chances for a win in the nightcap was spoiled as darkness halted the contest after seven innings with the score deadlocked at 6-6.
Haverford (21-9-2, 8-2-2 CC) scored in the first, fourth, and sixth inning to take game one by the final score of 4-0. Gettysburg (14-17-1, 4-7-1 CC) took a commanding early lead in the nightcap after busting out five runs in the second inning, but Haverford made the comeback by scoring in the next three frames.
The Fords took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but neither team had an opportunity to score during the next couple of innings as the defenses held strong for three up, three down situations.
Emma Souter added the second run for Haverford as she stole home in the fourth inning. The Fords poured out their final runs of game one in the sixth when Souter hit an RBI double and Marybeth Stone collected an RBI single.
Sophomore
Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomore
Shelby Baker (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) each notched a hit, while senior pitcher
Morgan Clauser (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) struck out six batters. Clauser is now ranked fourth all-time at Gettysburg with 302 strikeouts in her career with 110 coming from this season.
The nightcap was a much different story for the Bullets as they took charge early on by ripping out five runs in the top of the second inning. Baker scored the first tally off an error by the left fielder followed by an RBI single from senior
Sophia Blasius (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey). Junior
Sarahrose Jonik (Glenmoore, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) tacked on two more by pounding a two-RBI double to right field with senior
Meredith Taylor (Hamilton, N.J./Northern Burlington) producing an RBI double of her own.
With the bases loaded in the top of the third inning, the Fords scored their second run as they collected the first in the opening frame, but that would be all they could gather as the Bullets defense accumulated two outs on the next batter.
Baker then smashed a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to push the Bullets advantage 6-2.
The Fords rallied with two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6.
The Bullets held the Fords in the sixth and seventh inning, but could not convert on offense. The game did not go into extra innings due to darkness.
Taylor went 3-for-4, including a double, and an RBI. Jonik finished with two hits, including a double, two RBI, and a run scored with Baker notched a homer, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Gettysburg visits Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, April 23, at 3 p.m.
UPDATED 4/28/19
Gettysburg, Pa. – The Gettysburg College softball team hosted Haverford College on Sunday to resume its tied game that occurred 10 days ago that ended after the seventh inning due to darkness.
Starting where the teams left off, the Fords opened the top of the eighth with a pair of walks to put them in scoring position with one out. The Bullets accumulated the second out on the next at-bat as Clauser quickly turned and tossed the ball to Blasius, eliminating Emily Reinstadtler at third base. However, Haverford struck as Emma Souter hit the eventually game-winning RBI double up the middle on the next play.
Junior
Nicole Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) started the bottom of the frame off right for the Bullets as she singled to the shortstop. A sacrifice bunt by Jonik on the next play allowed Farese to advance to second. The Bullets, however, were unable to come up with the split as the next two batters struck out swinging.
