Bullets Athletics 2018-19 Year in Review

As we approach the start of another year at Gettysburg College, we want to take a look back on the outstanding accomplishments by our student-athletes and coaches from 2018-19. It was another successful campaign for the Orange and Blue capped by a trio of Centennial Conference championships and multiple national appearances.

Conference Champs
  • Men's Golf – The Bullets turned in an incredible rally in capturing the first conference title in 17 years, erasing a 15-stroke deficit to overtake Swarthmore for the crown. Seniors Danny Harcourt and Dane Sethre-Hofstad cemented their legacies as two of the top performers in program history by finishing 1-2 in the individual standings. Harcourt was the program's first conference medalist in eight years.
  • Women's Golf – While the men's team claimed a conference title for the first time in nearly two decades, the women's program continued its near-decade of conference dominance with its ninth title in a row. The Bullets jumped out to a 20-stroke lead on the opening day and tacked on five more strokes to beat out runner-up Marymount by 25 strokes. Juniors Skylar Frankiewicz and Hannah Fireman each claimed all-conference honors for the third-straight year by placing second and fourth, respectively.
  • Women's Lacrosse – For the second consecutive year, Gettysburg won the conference crown with a dominating display at Franklin & Marshall, downing the Diplomats 16-6 at Shadek Stadium. The Bullets raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, eventually leading by as many as 11 in the second period. Senior goalie Bailey Pilder shined with 11 saves and sophomore Kerry McKeever was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after posting four goals, two assists, three draw controls, and a caused turnover.

NCAA Division III Championship Appearances
  • Women's Basketball – Gettysburg clinched a spot in the national playoffs for the second year in a row after posting 22 wins and finishing runner-up in the Centennial Conference Championship. The Bullets ended up hosting the first two rounds of the tournament and squared off with annual national playoff participant Christopher Newport. In a back-and-forth war inside Bream Gym, the Captains broke a 78-all tie in the final minute with a lay-up and two free throws to steal an 82-78 decision. Junior Ashley Gehrin paced the Bullets with 18 points, while senior All-American Emma Dorshimer ended her outstanding career with 14 points and five rebounds.
  • Wrestling – For the fourth consecutive season, a Gettysburg grappler competed at the NCAA Division III Championship, and for the second year in a row it was senior Colin Kowalski. Kowalski earned his bid to nationals with an incredible 2018-19 campaign that saw him win 37 matches with 15 pins and 11 major decisions. He won individual titles at three tournaments and placed runner-up at the NCAA Southeast Regional. Unfortunately for Kowalski, a run at the podium wasn't meant to be as a lingering leg injury cut his opening match at 174 pounds against the defending national champion short. The Gettysburg senior finished his career fourth on the all-time list with 109 wins.
  • Men's Golf – After winning its first conference title in 17 years, the Bullets turned in a strong performance at nationals held at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky. The team finished tied for 24th out of 42 teams and just missed the two-day cut by five strokes. Individually, senior Danny Harcourt marched on to the final two rounds and completed the best NCAA finish ever by a Bullet, placing 15th overall with a total score of 296 (77-72-74-73).
  • Women's Golf – Making its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship, Gettysburg closed out a strong performance by trimming 21 shots off its second round total to shoot 338 in the final round. The team just missed the 15-team cut, finishing with a three-day total of 1,052 (355-359-338) for 21st. Junior Hannah Fireman led the way with her best finish at nationals, placing 66th overall with a score of 245 (84-77-84).
  • Men's Lacrosse – It's hard to imagine a postseason without Gettysburg as the team made its 26th overall trip to the national stage after a runner-up showing in the conference championship. The team faced an NCAA newcomer in St. John Fisher at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium and the Cardinals managed to hold on for an 11-10 victory in double overtime. Junior Brian Kolen led the Bullets with three goals, while sophomore Andrew Horn recorded six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Women's Lacrosse – The Bullets clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 18th consecutive campaign and made their opening opponent, Westminster (Pa.), pay the price with a 24-1 shellacking at Clark Field. Gettysburg set NCAA team records for points (44) and assists (20), while junior Liza Barr set program records with 15 points and 13 assists. Two more rounds of the national playoffs came to Clark Field the following weekend and the Bullets opened the regional round with a 14-3 win over Denison. An opportunity at a third consecutive national championship was halted the following day as eighth-ranked Wesleyan (Conn.) ended top-ranked Gettysburg's reign with a 10-7 decision. Sophomore Kerry McKeever paced the team with three goals and seven draw controls.

The Host with the Most
We take pride in hosting many large tournaments and events throughout the year and several conference and national championships visited Gettysburg in 2018-19. The conference swimming championship returned to the Bullets Pool and women's basketball hosted the CC Championship for the second consecutive year before hosting national playoff games for the first time in program history. Both lacrosse teams continued their annual traditions of hosting championship events as well.

Coaching Milestones
Following a year of several big staff changes in athletics, 2018-19 was a bit more reserve aside from the retirement of one of the most successful mentors in the history of the department, swimming coach Mike Rawleigh. Rawleigh guided the Bullets to a total of 42 conference titles and 548 victories in his 34 years at the helm. Greg Brown, the former assistant coach at Army, was tagged to replace Rawleigh in July. Rawleigh earned his 300th win in women's swimming, one of a handful of milestones achieved by Gettysburg coaches last year.
