How It Happened…
- First Quarter
- Gettysburg busted out of the gate with three goals in less than three minutes. Senior face-off specialist Alex Ulrich (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) got the party started by seizing the opening face-off and racing to the goal in just eight seconds. A defensive stop by the Bullets led to the game's second goal on a shot by Ward at 12:35. Just 15 seconds later, Kinsella converted off the face-off for a 3-0 lead.
- Mueller prevented more damage with a pair of saves for F&M, which helped set the stage for Andrew Towne to put the hosts on the board at 8:58.
- After causing a turnover, Fletcher scooped up the loose ball and fired a pass to Hume for a 4-1 lead less than a minute later. DeMuth sliced into the margin with back-to-back goals before Sullivan prevented a tie with a save on a shot by Keating inside the final minute.
- Second Quarter
- Despite a 12-second goal by Blake Target to open the period, F&M found itself playing from behind for most of the second quarter. Ward converted off a failed clear to regain the lead for the Bullets at 13:04 and despite a trio of saves by Mueller, Gettysburg tacked on another tally by junior Griffin Gallagher (Admore, Pa./Shipley School) to jump in front 6-4 with 9:17 to go in the half.
- Following a goal by the Diplomats, Ward converted again for a 7-5 lead at the half.
- Third Quarter
- Keating produced the first goal of the second half 66 seconds in and after a flurry of turnovers by both sides, Rigsby sent home the equalizer at 9:48.
- The Bullets answered quickly as Ward dished to sophomore McCain Wnek (Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover) at 8:40 for an 8-7 lead. Sophomore Aidan Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) handed Gettysburg a 9-7 lead off a pass from Hume at 2:34.
- Franklin & Marshall seized the lead with a three-goal spurt in the final minute. Christian Sullivan recovered a rebound for the first goal and Target scored on a man-up opportunity with 29 seconds left. DeMuth added the final tally right before the buzzer to give the hosts a 10-7 advantage heading into the final period.
- Fourth Quarter
- Keating carried the momentum into the final stanza with a quick goal, but Hume maintained the one-goal margin following a pass from Fletcher with 12:57 left. The reprieve was short-lived as the Diplomats fired back with the next five goals, the last by DeMuth making it 16-10 with 2:25 to play. F&M held the Bullets without a shot on goal inside the final eight minutes until Hume scored the game's final tally with 29 seconds left.
By the Numbers
- Franklin & Marshall led in ground balls (31-25) and face-off wins (18-11). Both teams managed 38 shot attempts.
- For the first time since 2000, the Centennial Conference champion was determined by the regular-season winning percentage. Franklin & Marshall claimed its second league crown and received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
- Gettysburg will await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on May 9. The program ranks among the all-time leaders in national playoff appearances with 26 since 1989.
- Fletcher cracked the program's top five in career assists thanks to his three dimes against F&M. The senior attackman has 81 helpers in his career, moving past Keith Fleming '90 and Jeff Barrette '92. Fletcher ranks 18th on the all-time scoring list with 156 points.
