Volleyball Earns Split at Messiah

Bullets sweep Lynchburg 3-0

GRANTHAM, Pa.  – The Gettysburg College volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season 3-0 to host Messiah College on Saturday. The Bullets bounced back in their second outing, sweeping past Lynchburg University in three sets.

Match Summary
  • First Set: Messiah blew the opening set open with a 16-3 run. The Falcons led 4-3 before the run with Seibert holding serve for the final six points, two of which came on aces. Messiah hit .455 on the attack in the set.
  • Second Set: The hosts once again turned in a big run, this time out-scoring Gettysburg 9-1 to jump in front 15-6. Kuba-McCoy accounted for five consecutive points for the Bullets with kills to help trim the lead to single digits, but the Falcons polished off the win with a kill by Rachel Garratt.
  • Third Set: The Bullets tried to reel in the quick-starting Falcons in the third set, erasing a seven-point deficit (11-4) to pull to 20-19 on a kill from Kuba-McCoy. After back-to-back points by the hosts, the Bullets ran off four-straight points to pull in front 23-22. Rashford stopped the rally with back-to-back kills and a final spike by Feight closed the three-set decision.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Messiah has won five of the last six, but Gettysburg remains in front in the all-time series 23-12.

Match Summary
  • First Set: Gettysburg did not commit a hitting error among its 31 attempts in the first set against Lynchburg. The Bullets pounded down 13 kills and jumped out to a quick double-digit lead at 17-7 following a kill by Kuba-McCoy. Freshman Cat Holtz (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) polished off the opening set with a kill off a pass from Nasir.
  • Second Set: The Bullets held the lead for nearly all of the second set and went ahead 11-5 on a big block from Holtz and fellow first-year Michaela Ryan (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). Gettysburg took a 21-14 lead on an ace by sophomore Callie Pidoriano (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Ellis capped the victory with an ace of her own.
  • Third Set: The Hornets weren't going to go away quietly and forced a total of seven ties in the final set. Gettysburg emerged with a 14-10 advantage on a service error by Lynchburg, but the Hornets came back with a pair of points and eventually worked into an 18-all tie on a kill from Nicole Brice. The Bullets held match point twice before Holtz finally put the contest to rest with a kill.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
This was the first official meeting between Gettysburg and Lynchburg in volleyball.
 
Looking Ahead
Gettysburg returns to the court with a non-conference road trip to Stevenson University on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
