BALTIMORE – Sophomore
Alex Kagan (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and freshman
Michael Fellman (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) each went unbeaten in singles action and Gettysburg College made the most of its first fall tournament in seven years with a strong showing at the Goucher College Invitational on Sept. 18-19.
Match Highlights
- Gettysburg's last fall tournament was the Mount Saint Mary's Invitational in 2014.
- The Bullets went 5-1 overall during the final day of competition.
- Kagan and classmate Michael Zayneh (Hilton Head Island, S.C./Heritage Academy) checked in an early highlight for the Bullets by knocking off Drew's top tandem of Avi Perera and Bret Schuler 8-4 in their opening bout. Perera, who did not compete for Drew last year, was 8-0 in doubles play two years ago and Schuler went 11-1 in doubles action for the Rangers last season.
- Fellman nearly posted a perfect weekend on the courts. The first-year went 2-1 in doubles play with junior Matt Rau (Castle Pines, Colo./Regis Jesuit) with the only setback coming in a tiebreaker(8-7 (4)) to Siddharth Byreddy and Kenneth Elliott of Ramapo. Fellman picked up wins in all three of his singles bouts and dropped only two games along the way.
- Kagan, an all-conference singles performer a year ago, also went 3-0. The sophomore had to put in overtime to clinch the sweep, outlasting Mathius Dessureau of Harford Community College in a super-tiebreaker 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
- Zayneh also closed his weekend with an extra-set victory. He bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Haverford's Patrick Kley 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
- Senior Patrick Bodovitz (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) opened his weekend with a tiebreaker setback, but rebounded for a pair of straight-set wins. Bodovitz defeated Nick Fleming of Immaculata 6-2, 6-3 before downing Ryan Wartenburg of Goucher 6-1, 6-4.
- Freshman Hayden Strittmatter (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) won his final two doubles and singles matches. Strittmatter teamed with Bodovitz for 8-5 and 8-3 wins over teams Drew and Harford CC, respectively. The first-year capped Saturday's action with a super-tiebreaker victory over Goucher's Joshua Noel 6-3, 2-6, 10-8. His tournament finale wasn't nearly as dramatic, scoring a straight-set win over Michael Francis 6-1, 6-2.
- Rau also turned in a tiebreaker win in singles action, rebounding from a second-set loss to beat John Dickey of Drew 6-0, 4-6, 10-7 in his first singles match. The junior closed his weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jason Watts from Immaculata.
