Gettysburg Earns Split with Norwich

Bullets score four runs in sixth to win nightcap 9-8

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Norwich University (9-3) slipped by Gettysburg College (3-5) 13-12 after scoring five runs in the sixth inning of the opening game, but the Bullets returned the favor in the nightcap, bringing across four runs in the sixth to secure a 9-8 victory on Friday afternoon.

Breakdown
  • Gettysburg struck first with Muir scampering home on a groundout. Norwich answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a wild pitch and single by Roberge. The Cadets jumped in front 5-1 with three runs in the second inning, including a two-run single by Roberge.
  • The Bullets jumped all over the Norwich pitching staff in the fourth inning, sending 15 batters to the plate and racking up 10 runs on nine hits. Gettysburg posted seven consecutive base knocks to start the inning, including a two-run doubles by junior Kyle Miller (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and Peipher. After the Cadets recorded their first out, Seibert blasted his first homer of the season to center field to push the lead to 12-5.
  • Norwich pulled to 12-8 with three runs in the home half of the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, the Cadets scored a run on a single by Roberge before Richardson cleared the bases and tied the game with a double to center field. A fielding miscue by the Bullets accounted for the go-ahead run.

Breakdown
  • The Bullets once again struck first, piling up five runs in their first at bat. Miller and Muir led off the game with a pair of singles and came around to score on a triple by senior Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson). Decker scored on a single by Seibert and Angulo added a two-run single to give Gettysburg a 5-0 lead.
  • Senior Teo Torrado (New York, N.Y./Polytech Prep Country Day) cruised through the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. A two-out walk was followed by a pair of singles to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hayes cashed in with a grand slam to left field to slice the deficit down to one.
  • Norwich added another four-spot in the sixth. A two-run single by Tyler Callahan broke a 5-5 tie and a sacrifice fly by PJ Morales put the Cadets ahead 8-5.
  • The Bullets loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two singles by Miller and Muir and an error on a hit by Kirby. A fielder's choice brought in the first run and a single by Seibert made it 8-7. Senior Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College) provided a pinch-hit single to plate Decker and tie the game before an error by the Cadets brought across the eventual game-winning run.
  • Junior Mike Giammarino (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) induced a trio of groundouts to close out the victory.

Gettysburg improved to 9-1 all-time against Norwich.

The Bullets close their spring trip with a doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
