How It Happened…
- First Quarter
- The game's first goal came from a heads-up play by W&L's Alex Brown, who managed to snag a rebounded save off MacMillan's stick and fling it right back into the netting at 12:33. Spagnoletti kept the Bullets off the board with three saves in the opening eight minutes.
- Wykoff scored Gettysburg's first goal at 7:07 and the Bullets took a 2-1 lead on a defense-led transition with junior defenseman Zack Puckhaber (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) dishing to classmate and defensive midfielder Michael Zima (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) cutting down the middle through the Generals' defense for his first career goal at 4:51.
- An unassisted goal by Witherell tied the contest just over a minute later, but the Bullets answered with the period's final two tallies. Howard recovered a ground ball off his own rebound and flipped a pass to Raymond for the first score at 2:02. Just 30 seconds later, Wykoff blasted his second goal for a 4-2 lead.
- Second Quarter
- Gettysburg turned up the defensive dial in the second period, holding W&L to just five shots and forcing seven turnovers. A turnover by the Generals led to the Bullets' first goal as Knife caught a pass from freshman Jack Dunleavy (New Providence, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and fired it into the back of the cage.
- The visitors cut the deficit to 5-3 with a goal by Ott at 5:52. The Generals picked up a penalty a minute later and Gettysburg cashed in with a rocket out of Howard's stick to make it 6-3 heading into halftime.
- Third Quarter
- MacMillan equaled his first-half save total with four early saves to start the second half. The senior keeper stopped Brown and two attempts by Witherell in a 24-second span before junior Quinton Mather (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) sent a ball to the net at 10:13 to push the lead to 7-3.
- The Generals remained behind by four goals when Hills Burns scored a man-up goal to slice the deficit down to three (8-5) with 1:25 left. The Bullets came right back after winning the next face-off with Wykoff polishing off his hat trick and making it 9-5 heading into the final period.
- Fourth Quarter
- The teams turned in four penalties to start the fourth period and while Gettysburg held W&L out of the scoring column, the Generals were not as fortunate with their man-down defense. Howard found Raymond for the Bullets' final man-up goal with 8:11 to play.
- The Generals pulled to 10-6 on a goal by Hudson Pokorny with 4:26 left, but that would be as close as they would get with MacMillan crossing the double-digit save mark with two stops over the final minutes.
By the Numbers
- The Bullets led in shots (49-32) and face-off wins (11-9), while the Generals held the edge in ground balls (32-25).
- Gettysburg has allowed only four man-up goals in 25 opportunities (16 percent) this season. The Bullets have not allowed more than one man-up goal in a game this spring.
- Raymond, who was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, scored multiple points for the fifth time in six games. He leads the Bullets in goals (14), assists (11), and points (25) this season.
- Zima became the 22nd Gettysburg player to score a goal this season, eight more than the number of goal scorers for the team in 2021.
- MacMillan produced his fourth consecutive double-figure save outing. The senior keeper has allowed more goals than saves made in only one game this season and sports a .625 save percentage through six games.
Where the Series Stands
Gettysburg improved to 17-11 with its third win in a row over Washington and Lee. Each of the last two meetings was decided by a goal, including a 12-11 decision that marked the final contest of the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
