Bullets Secure Sweep at Shenandoah

Gettysburg earns 2-1 and 4-3 victories

WINCHESTER, Va. – Freshman Lauren O'Leary (Manasquan, N.J./Jackson Memorial) drove in both runs in a 2-1 victory in the opening game and fellow first-year Carlie Goldstein (Verona, Pa./Verona) came through with a two-run single for the go-ahead runs in the fifth inning of a 4-3 victory in the nightcap as Gettysburg College (9-3) completed a sweep of Shenandoah University (3-9) in non-conference softball action on Sunday.

Freshman Paige Forry (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) cruised through the first four innings and allowed only two hits by Shenandoah in the opening game. The Bullets loaded the bags in the second inning with O'Leary slapping a single up the middle to plate the game's first run with one out. Gettysburg wasn't able to pad the lead as Megan Scalley escaped the jam with a strikeout and force out to third base.

Freshman Elliana Hopple (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) decked a triple to center field to lead off the fourth inning. Two batters later, O'Leary picked up another RBI with a single to right field to put Gettysburg up 2-0.

Forry walked the lead-off batter in the fifth and was replaced by freshman Audrey Wright (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West). An error put two runners on the bases and following a force out at second, Taylor Glover put the Hornets on the board with a single up the middle. Wright picked up a pop up to first base and a ground out to second to close the inning.

Gettysburg threatened to cash in some more runs by loading the bases with one out in the seventh inning. Savannah Thorne came into the game and quelled the threat with a force out at home and a ground out to third base.

A lead-off single in the seventh led to Forry re-entering the game. She promptly struck out Glover and after issuing a walk, the first-year pitcher caught Kayla Stephenson watching strike three to close the game.

Forry improved to 4-1 after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts. Wright pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and gave up three hits. O'Leary was the lone Bullet to manage two base knocks.

The Bullets battled from behind in the late innings to pull off the sweep. Junior Olivia Moser (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) gave Gettysburg a 1-0 lead with a single in the first inning, but two bases-loaded walks in the second inning put Shenandoah in front. The Hornets took a 3-1 lead on a single to right by Thorne in the third inning.

Goldstein drew a walk and advanced to second on a groundout by O'Leary in the fourth inning. Sophomore Giovanna Komst (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) brought home the runner with a double to left field to cut the deficit down to 3-2.

In Gettysburg's next at bat, three walks loaded up the bases with two outs. Goldstein came through in the clutch, singling up the middle to score two runs and put the Bullets ahead 4-3.

Sophomore Megan Hughes (Woodstock, Md./Marriotts Ridge) threw four scoreless innings to end the game and left a total of seven Hornets stuck on the bases. She improved to 2-1 after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing one run on six hits.

Komst and Moser both finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Hopple reached base three times on a hit and two walks.

Gettysburg heads to York (Pa.) College for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 22, at 3 p.m.
