Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's tennis team came out on the short end of a long day at the Ursinus indoor courts at the Floy Lewis Bake Center, falling 5-4 to the Bears in a match that went into the wee hours Sunday morning.
Strength in the bottom half of the lineup proved to be the difference in a match that was finally decided at No. 6 singles, where sophomore Ethan Yu defeated senior
Max Levy (Orinda, Cal./Miramonte) 6-2, 6-2 to provide the pivotal point, finishing at 2:40 a.m. The Bears also took straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, as well as an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles.
The match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. outdoors, but was eventually moved indoors due to wet conditions, and contested on just three courts, not beginning until about 10 p.m., following the completion of the Gettysburg-Ursinus women's match (which the Bears won 5-3).
Ursinus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in doubles, but freshman
Michael Fellman (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) and junior
Matt Rau (Castle Rock, Col./Regis Jesuit) rallied for an 8-7 (7-3) win at No. 2 doubles to get the Bullets back in the match. The visitors kept the momentum going by sweeping the top three singles matches, getting victories from sophomore
Alex Kagan (Guilford, Conn/Guilford), and Fellman by identical 6-3, 6-1 scores, and a thrilling 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win by sophomore
Michael Zayneh (Hilton Head, S.C./Heritage Academy) at No. 3 to give the Bullets a 4-2 lead heading into the final three matches.
The trio of straight-set wins in the bottom half of the lineup, all of which went on-court after midnight, proved to be the difference.
Ursinus improves to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Bullets fall to 5-3, 0-2. The Bullets will have a week to rest up, returning to action at home on Sat., April 2, against Muhlenberg.
